Abstract:
The article discusses some important elements for understanding the Response released by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on their moral obligations to patients diagnosed as being in a so-called persistent vegetative state (PVS). The Declaration on Euthanasia of 1980 mentions the discretion patients may have to refuse medical treatment that seems to them burdensome. The obligation to provide basic care reaches its limits when such assistance can no longer fulfill its basic purpose.
